Playoff Picks - Championship Sunday

1/20/2012

That darned half-point hook kept me from a respectable 2-2 record last weekend and now I'm back at .500 but at least the fake bank still has $1200 in it.  So, we find ourselves at Championship Sunday.  There are two Harbaugh's, no Tebowmania, and America's Crappiest Stadium gets one more chance to have a "power outage" and stiff-arm their way into a new stadium.  Before we get to the picks, let's look into the crystal ball and predict what the next two weeks will be like if a given scenario plays out on Sunday.

New England vs. San Francisco.  This is easily the least nauseating scenario.  Plenty of nostalgia as the Patriots will be returning to the Super Bowl and one of the most storied franchises returning to the Super Bowl as well in the Niners.  There will be plenty of "Re-birth of Alex Smith" stories.  I'm hoping there will be some kind of story about how Tom Brady won 3 Super Bowls when he was with Bridgette but hasn't won any since he's been with Gisele.  That could make for a fun Media Day for once.

New England vs. New York.  Easily the most nauseating scenario.  Not only will the East Coast Media Bias Machine be in full force, but we'll have to watch highlights from Super Bowl 42 for 14 straight days.  Plus, I don't think I like the idea of the Giants fans getting another crack at the Super Bowl since they constantly are calling for Coughlin's head even though he did win you a Super Bowl just a few short years ago.  As we Seahawks fans should know, don't ever get tired of winning.  You will inevitably get rid of your best coach ever.

Playoff Picks - Divisional Round

1/13/2012

Well, a good start to the playoff picks last week, going 3-1 and ending up with a fake bank worth $1800.  I profusely apologize for anyone who lost real money on that Cincy-Houston game.  I should have known better than to trust a rookie ginger QB.  My bad.

We move on to a divisional weekend that sees cities that most people envisioned hosting 2nd weekend games when the year began.  Green Bay, Baltimore, Foxborough.....San Francisco??!!  Ok, maybe not the last one.  Let's get down to the business of making more drachmas (those who played Carmen Sandiego will appreciate that).  We'll go in chronological order.

SAN FRANCISCO +3.5 vs. New Orleans: You have no idea how much it pains me to know that America's Crappiest Stadium will be filled with annoying Niners fans the 2nd weekend in January.  You have no idea how much more it pains me to pick said Niners.  But, this is about making money so we have to take emotion out of it.  New Orleans has never won a road playoff game in their franchise history (Super Bowl is technically neutral-site).  Dome teams don't fare very well outside in the playoffs as it is, even though this game won't be a cold weather game.  San Francisco's defense is a force to be reckoned with.  My one hesitation is that the Niners offense is pretty inept inside the red zone.  Normally, you wouldn't be able to stay with Drew Brees with that handicap, but the defense makes up for it.  Holding my nose and closing my eyes, I'll put down $300 on Harbaugh's boys.

Tommy Boy Season Review

1/12/2012

Well, another Seahawks season is in the books.  The Hawks continue to be the team with the most finishes at 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 since the merger.  Yet another year as the epitome of mediocrity.  Seems to be a pattern in this town, and not just with the Hawks, but I digress.  There was definitely improvement in areas and regression in others as times.  While mediocre, the Hawks were definitely not boring this year.  There were surprises, both good and bad.  There were days of great elation and days of great frustration.  There was even a day where our coach let his hormones get in the way.  Let's take a trip to Sandusky, Ohio and re-live the season through the eyes of Tommy Boy.

"What the American public doesn't know is what makes them the American public.": That's when Vegas takes advantage.  Knowing nothing was expected of the Hawks, particularly with T-Jack taking the snaps, they set the over/under for wins at either 6 or 6.5.  Plenty of money went on the under and Vegas laughs all the way to the bank as Brandon Browner was waltzing into the end zone in Chicago.

Playoff Picks - Wild Card Round

One year ago Seahawk Nation was basking in the glory of thoroughly pissing off the national media by hosting a playoff game and then going out and taking care of business against the Saints.  Unfortunately, 7-9 wasn't good enough to win the division again this year so we're stuck having to watch it from the couch this year. But let's bring back the picks column and see if we can win a little fake money and/or help those of you winging your way to Nevada to make some real money.  For the fake money part, I'll start with a bank of $1,000.  As always, the odds are from the USA Today this morning and the home team is in bold caps.

NEW ORLEANS -10.5 vs. Detroit: I know, I know, we all saw what happened last year when the Saints were double digit favorites in the first weekend of the playoffs.  However, they obviously don't have to deal with the 12th Man since they'll be at home.  The Lions haven't been in the playoffs since 1999 so you know there's a little bit of "we're just happy to be here" syndrome that could creep into their locker room.  Drew Brees in that dome with that crowd for a playoff game is a recipe for a big Saints win.  Let's put $400 of the bank on it.

Happy Gilmore Review Weeks 16/17

1/5/2012

Well, the Dare To Dream Express de-railed and looked a lot like the train wreck in The Fugitive.  Granted, we didn't get the help we needed from Norv Turner (huge shock there) so regardless of how the Hawks finished they weren't going to the postseason, but it would have been fun if that Arizona game meant more.  I apologize for the delay in the review but vacation and work stuff had to take priority and I had zero desire to type out a blog on my new iphone.  Let's take a look at the last couple games through the eyes of Happy Gilmore.

"What's this I hear about you breaking a rake and throwing it in the woods?": After that Niners game on Christmas Eve, I can't guarantee that this didn't happen.  The Hawks had that game in their grasp, including another blocked punt, and let it slip through their fingers.

"Now, you've had enough... bitch.": After the agony of that 2-6 start and the building of hope that the Hawks gave us in the second half, they finally finished us off on Christmas Eve and we landed in the proverbial puddle.  Just when we thought we could get back up, one more haymaker was delivered via the Arizona game and we'd finally had enough.  The only question was whether that was Bob Barker delivering that blow or if it was Bill Bidwell.  They're about the same age although Bob was always the better dresser and definitely had the better inspirational putt.

"What a shot by Happy Gilmore! [turns to his partner] Who the hell is Happy Gilmore?": Who the hell was this Lockette guy on Sunday?  That was a pretty impressive catch of a pretty impressive throw by Jackson.  Did the Hawks find their deep threat for next year?  Maybe, maybe not, but it gives us some continued hope that the Schneider/Carroll tandem has a decent eye for talent.

"Everyone seems to be coming around... Well I'm not Doug!": Well, I don't know that everyone's coming around yet, but there is definitely growing confidence in both Carroll and Tarvaris.  It's tough to get too excited about another 7-9 season, but there definitely feels like there are fewer holes on this team than we thought at the beginning of the year.  While I don't think there's a huge ground swell for T-Jack to be the starter next year, we at least feel ok if he's our backup instead of old Clipboard Chaz.

"I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive.": Ok, as long as I'm willing to admit that.  Ok, maybe I was a little optimistic when I predicted a 9-7 year.  Ok, I completely ignored the possibility that the Niners were going to be good.   But, this was not the 4-12 team that many thought it would be.  We definitely saw some growth, particularly on defense.  We were frustrated with the offense many times, as we knew we would be.  Now we hope that Pom Pom Pete can go get us a quarterback and maybe a big-play receiver and we might have something.

"It's all in the hips. It's all in the hips.": I choose to believe that's what it is about Larry Fitzgerald.  That guy is absolutely amazing, especially considering who he's had throwing him the ball the last couple years.  After a couple of those one-handed catches on Sunday, you wish the refs would check that guy for super glue on his gloves.  I'm picturing an Eddie Harris from Major League amount of products under his helmet to make sure he can catch the ball with only one finger.

"You know what *else* could draw a crowd? A golfer with an arm growing out of his ass.": Talk about plenty of good seats still being available in Arizona on Sunday.  Sure it was a matchup of two teams that were going to miss the playoffs, but that's inexcusable.  You know the blue hairs down there weren't out partying all night on New Years Eve.  It wasn't 25 degrees or anything.  The Cardinals had actually been playing well lately.  Yet, there were maybe 40,000 people there on Sunday.  Epic fail Cardinals fans.

Back tomorrow with the return of the picks column for the playoffs.  We'll see how much fake money we can make throughout the playoffs.  Also, at some point next week, I'll put together a season recap.
